Marijuana: What You Need to Know

The legalization of marijuana in Canada has given rise to a burgeoning industry. Now, in small and large towns, you’ll find marijuana retailers dappled throughout the cities, offering THC-infused drinks, snacks, and smokables—all at affordable prices.

Road Safety

The pressing concern of impaired driving due to drugs or a combination of drugs and alcohol, looms large today. Marijuana-impaired drivers experience slower reaction times and compromised coordination. But some people argue that staying off the road solves the problem. Not surprisingly, there are other profound risks that need to be considered.

THC Content

THC levels in mainstream edibles, drinks, and smokables have surged over the past few decades. Today’s tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content is three times higher than 25 years ago, significantly impacting the brain. While research hasn’t fully explored high-potency effects, it’s evident that more THC leads to greater dependency and addiction rates.

Addiction and Overall Health

Contrary to popular belief, marijuana use carries risks of addiction with approximately 1 in 10 marijuana users becoming addicted, and if marijuana is used before age 18, the addiction rate rises to 1 in 6.

Additionally, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), people using cannabis may struggle with symptoms of cannabis use disorder affecting virtually every part of the human body, with the following noteworthy concerns:

·       Brain Health. Marijuana permanently lowers IQ by up to 8 points—even after quitting.

·       Mental Health. It is associated with depression, anxiety, and psychotic episodes (though causality remains uncertain).

·       Heart Health. Immediate effects include a faster heart rate and increased blood pressure. Long-term risks include stroke, heart disease, and other vascular issues.

·       Lung Health. Smoking cannabis harms lung tissues, causing scarring and damage to blood vessels.

·       Athletic Performance. Causes coordination and timing impairment, potentially affecting sports abilities.

·       Baby’s Health. Using marijuana during pregnancy will harm fetal growth and brain development.

·       Daily Life. Correlations with relationship issues, lower educational achievement, and reduced life satisfaction.

Understanding marijuana risks is essential for informed decision-making. Whatever your goals around health, prosperity, improved relationships, and spiritual connection, understanding the impacts of marijuana and setting clear goals to make wise choices needs to be the strategy.
